Why October Is the Perfect Time to Check In on Your Child’s Academic Progress

The school year is officially underway. The excitement of new classes, new teachers, and fresh school supplies has started to settle, and students are beginning to experience the real pace and expectations of their courses.

That makes October one of the most important times for parents and students to pause and ask a simple question: How is the school year actually going?

Waiting until report cards arrive or grades begin to fall can make academic challenges more difficult to address. An early check-in gives students the opportunity to identify what is working, recognize what needs improvement, and make adjustments while there is still plenty of time to succeed.

Look Beyond the Grade

Grades are important, but they do not always tell the entire story.

A student may be earning a good grade while struggling to understand certain concepts. Another student may understand the material but lose points because of missing assignments, poor organization, or test anxiety.

When checking in on academic progress, consider asking:

  • Is the student completing assignments on time?

  • Are there particular subjects or concepts that feel more difficult?

  • How are quizzes and tests going?

  • Does the student feel comfortable asking teachers for help?

  • Are study habits working effectively?

  • Is the student feeling overwhelmed or unmotivated?

These questions can reveal challenges before they become reflected in a final grade.

Build Better Habits Early

October is also an excellent time to evaluate a student's routine.

As coursework becomes more demanding, students need consistent habits for studying, completing homework, preparing for exams, and managing extracurricular activities.

Small changes can make a significant difference. Creating a weekly study schedule, breaking large assignments into smaller tasks, reviewing class material regularly, and setting aside distraction-free study time can help students feel more prepared and confident.

The goal is not simply to work harder. It is to help students learn how to work more effectively.

Ask for Help Before It Becomes Urgent

Students sometimes wait until they are significantly behind before asking for academic support. By that point, they may be trying to learn new material while simultaneously catching up on concepts they did not fully understand.

Seeking help early can prevent that cycle.

Tutoring and academic coaching can provide students with individualized support, additional practice, and strategies that may not be possible during a busy school day. Early intervention also gives students more time to strengthen foundational skills before coursework becomes more advanced.

Don't Forget About Long-Term Goals

For middle school and high school students, an October academic check-in can also include a conversation about the future.

Students preparing for the ISEE, SSAT, PSAT, SAT, ACT, or other standardized tests should begin thinking about preparation well before their desired testing date. High school students can also use this time to review college goals, extracurricular involvement, course selections, and application timelines.

Academic success is not built during one stressful week before an important deadline. It develops through consistent preparation over time.

Make the Rest of the Semester Count

If the first few weeks of school have not gone exactly as planned, that does not mean the semester is lost.

October offers students an opportunity to reset.

With the right plan and support, students can improve their study habits, strengthen difficult subjects, prepare for upcoming exams, and approach the rest of the semester with greater confidence.

At Kente Academy, we believe every student deserves academic support that recognizes their individual strengths, challenges, and goals. Through tutoring, test preparation, academic coaching, and college planning, we help students develop the skills they need for success both inside and outside the classroom.
