Celebrating Moms, Mentors & Makers: A STEM Mother’s Day Tribute
This week, we’re celebrating someone very special: moms! Whether they’re cheering from the sidelines, helping with homework, or leading science and tech projects at work, moms are often the first STEM supporters in a child’s life. At Kente Academy, we believe that learning grows stronger with love, support, and curiosity. Many of our students grow because of the care and strength of the women who guide them.
This Mother’s Day, we’re thanking all the moms and mother figures who help children explore, learn, and lead in STEM.
Moms Who Inspire STEM Learning
Behind many young learners is a mom who says, “Keep trying!” Moms help build strong habits by asking great questions, encouraging big ideas, and showing what’s possible.
Some of our students shared:
“My mom is the reason I love math.”
“She helps me when I get stuck.”
“She showed me that women can be scientists too.”
But did you know that moms who work in science and technology sometimes face extra challenges? A 2013 study showed that some mothers working in STEM jobs, especially in colleges, felt they had to work harder than others to be taken seriously. These women said they often had to prove themselves more just because they were moms. Still, they stayed strong, kept going, and helped others learn and grow.
Another study in 2020 discussed how the COVID-19 pandemic made things even harder for many women scientists. With schools closed and families at home, some moms had to balance work, childcare, and teaching their kids all at once. This made it harder for them to focus on their science careers.
These stories show us just how powerful moms are and how important it is to support them, especially in STEM fields.
STEM at Home: Learning with Love
Mother’s Day may have passed, but it’s never too late to celebrate the amazing moms and mother figures who inspire curiosity and creativity every day. This week, we’re inviting families to continue the celebration by exploring STEM together through fun, hands-on activities at home:
Use measuring cups and fractions to cook a favorite recipe
Build a light-up card with paper circuits—just like the ones we made for Mother’s Day
Track how much water your family uses and come up with a plan to save more
STEM learning starts at home, and with a little love and creativity, every day can be an opportunity to discover something new. STEM is all around us. It just takes curiosity, creativity, and someone to learn with.
Why Saying “Thank You” Matters
At Kente Academy, we always encourage reflection. This means pausing to think about what you’ve learned and who helped you along the way.
Here are some questions to try:
• Who helps me keep learning when it gets tough?
• What’s one thing I’ve learned from my mom or mentor?
• How can I show them I’m thankful?
Even a small note, hug, or high-five can go a long way.
Looking Ahead with Gratitude and Grit
Mother’s Day is a chance to celebrate the people who lift us up and to remember that learning isn’t something we do alone.
Let’s support moms in every role: as caregivers, coaches, teachers, and scientists. Let’s make sure more women feel welcome and respected in STEM careers.
This week, we’re asking:
• How can we help more moms feel supported in science and education?
• How can families and schools work together to grow future STEM leaders?
Because when we learn together, we grow stronger together.
